All my family is overweight. So even if I lose weight, I fear I’ll just gain it back. Is my weight genetic?
Genetics are one factor in our size but it’s never the whole story. At ZG we will help you understand the science of good nutrition, how to avoid wide variations in your blood sugar, and the importance of exercise in maintaining your health. Families often share the same bad habits and lifestyle which result in familial tendency to weight problems.
I don’t have time to work out, so wouldn’t it be better for me to have gastric bypass surgery, or try weight loss medications?
Gastric bypass surgery, or any surgery, carries the risk of complications and medications alter your normal physiology. Some people may still require either or both. However, by participating in the ZG KEY program you will improve your overall health and fitness. There are two advantages. First, in many cases, you may avoid the use of medication or the need for surgery altogether. Secondly, if you do need surgery, you will be better prepared physically and mentally for the challenges of surgery.
I have Type 2 diabetes and I already went through Diabetic Outpatient Counseling. How can your program help me?
The ZG KEY program differs from traditional diabetic counseling in its emphasis on cardiovascular fitness and strength training. At ZG KEY you will learn the nutritional basis and the science involved in health and lifestyle management. However, in addition, you will learn the importance of activity and work with exercise science experts to establish a foundation of consistent and progressive activity.
I am a Type 1 Diabetic. How can your program help me, especially with my nutrition?
If you have Type I Diabetes, your body does not make insulin and therefore, your cells cannot access the sugar (glucose) it needs to fuel your cells. The nutrition part of the educational program is designed to teach you how to avoid wide swings in the level of glucose in your blood stream. In addition, the ZG exercise program will improve your body’s ability to respond to your insulin. Together, proper nutrition and consistent exercise will most likely reduce the amount of insulin you require on a daily basis. It is extremely important that the doctor who takes care of you for diabetes is aware of your participation and that you monitor your blood sugars closely, in order to avoid a dangerous drop in your blood sugar level (hypoglycemia).
I am waiting to have gastric bypass surgery but my doctor wants me to lose 25 pounds first. Is ZG the place for that?
Absolutely! First, ZG will prepare you for surgery by improving your health and reducing your risk of complications. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, once you begin to lose weight, you may postpone or even eliminate the need for surgery.
I am expecting to have surgery in eight weeks. Should I wait to start the next program instead of starting now?
We would recommend starting as soon as possible, especially under these circumstances. Ideally you would be as healthy as possible to ensure a successful surgery and a rapid, uncomplicated recovery. You’d be welcome to continue right where you left off, in the event that your surgery takes place during the program. Of course, consult with your physician to be sure he/she approves of you starting the ZG program before surgery.
I have bad knees and a back issue. Can I still do the program?
Absolutely! Your assessment includes an evaluation of your exercise capacity, as well as a detailed medical history. Our exercise science team will review this information, customize your exercise program accordingly, and when appropriate, assign you to a gradual progression on selected exercise equipment. Of course, you should be able to take full advantage all other program components and resources.
I recently had a cardiac event and now take a number of cardiac medications. Can your program help me?
Yes. However, as with all our participants, we require clearance from your physician, indicating you are okay to participate in the program. It’s important to understand that the ZG KEY program is not designed to replace a cardiac rehabilitation program that your doctor may recommend after a cardiac event. Once you have been cleared by your cardiologist, you are welcome to participate at ZG. In fact, it’s important now more than ever to have appropriate nutrition and consistent exercise, both of which will help improve your heart’s performance.
I have sleep apnea? Will your program help with that?
Yes. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) occurs when we fall asleep and the muscles in the back of our throat relax allowing the surrounding tissue to collapse and obstruct or block our normal flow of air. This leads to snoring, poor sleep patterns and a whole host of related problems. Appropriate nutrition, weight loss, muscle strengthening, and improved cardiovascular fitness can all help improve OSA.
I just went through radiation and chemotherapy. Will that affect my ability to do the program?
That shouldn’t keep you from joining us. The ZG KEY program focuses on good nutrition and exercise to strengthen your body and cardiovascular system, both of which will help you manage some of the side effects of cancer treatment. Also, some cancers are related to the cascade of poor diet, inactivity, and chronic inflammation, also markers of Metabolic Syndrome.
What about B12 shots? Appetite suppressants? HGB? Do those things work?
There's no solid evidence that vitamin B-12 injections aid weight loss. Vitamin B-12 is a water-soluble B complex vitamin found naturally in a variety of foods, including meat, fish and dairy products. Vitamin B-12 is also added to some foods and is available as a dietary supplement. Vitamin B-12 injections are commonly prescribed to help prevent or treat pernicious anemia and B-12 deficiency. Getting large amounts of vitamin B-12 through vitamin B-12 injections isn't likely to harm your health but is not a treatment for weight issues.
Appetite suppressants are drugs that trick your body and brain into thinking that you are full and don’t need to eat. Most alter chemicals in your brain known as serotonin or catecholamines. Many of these drugs (Phentermine, for example) act like or are amphetamines. These require a prescription, should not be used other than for short term, and have many side effects, including the potential for addiction and abuse, increased blood pressure, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, nervousness, and insomnia. These medications should be used with caution, if at all, in patients with heart disease, hypertension, overactive thyroid and glaucoma. In most people, the effects tend to level off after several weeks.
Another type of weight loss medication (Orlistat) inhibits absorption of fat. Some side effects with Orlistat include abdominal cramping, passing gas, leakage of oily stool, increased number of bowel movements, and the inability to control bowel movements. These side effects are generally mild and temporary, but may be worsened by eating foods that are high in fat.
If you want to lose weight, resist the lure of quick and easy solutions. They simply don’t work in the long haul. What works is permanently adopting a healthy lifestyle. Enjoy healthier foods and include physical activity in your daily routine. The ZG KEY program will teach you how and why.
I don’t need to exercise because I’m thin and perfectly healthy, except for the few medications I take for cholesterol. Why should I do the program?
You would definitely benefit from the ZG KEY program. It is not just about weight loss but about adopting a healthier lifestyle. By learning how to control your blood sugar and exercise appropriately, you may improve your health and not have to take that medication, or at the very least, lessen your risk of disease.
Can I give you lab work results from my doctor, instead of doing blood work there?
Lab work is optional, but strongly encouraged. We will gladly accept physician lab work from your physician, as long it was done within the last three months. We specifically need fasting glucose, a cholesterol profile, and A1C. Fasting blood work can also be done at ZG for an additional fee, at scheduled times.
I see you need physician clearance. Is that really necessary? I’m not going to see my doctor for another month or so.
Yes, we ask for physician clearance since your doctor is familiar with your medical history and present condition. If you cannot see your doctor, we will be glad to facilitate this and fax him/her a form to sign to approve your participation.
I understand you need physician clearance to participate in the program, but I haven’t seen a doctor for ten years. What should I do?
We do require a physician’s clearance to participate in the program. If you do not have a personal physician, we would be happy to refer one to you and will help facilitate getting an appointment.

I am on some medications that interact poorly with certain foods. Will that be a problem with the nutrition program?
No problem. Our nutrition team will review your health assessment and medications list and meet with you individually to modify your eating plan, as necessary.
I have food allergies and am gluten intolerant so I have to eat a special diet. How could I ever follow your nutrition guidelines?
It’s not a problem. Dr. Zacharias and our nutrition team will review you dietary needs and help you come up with a plan that works within our framework and your requirements.
I am a vegetarian so I NEVER eat meat. I follow my own diet. Won’t that be a problem?
Remember, this program is not a diet. The goal is to provide you the education that allows you to make healthy decisions within the context of your daily life. Our nutrition team will meet with you and review any specific dietary needs you have. Many vegetarians have successfully completed our program, without compromising their personal dietary principles.
I have always hated eating vegetables. I know you’ll probably require that I eat them. If I don’t, am I pre-disposed to failing?
We won’t make you do anything but we will certainly educate you. At ZG we teach you the science behind nutrition and controlling your blood sugar. Sometimes that knowledge opens people's minds to small changes. Also, if you’re interested, our nutrition team will show you tricks for becoming more of a vegetable eater, despite your current preference. Regardless of any issue, NOBODY is predisposed to failing the ZG program. We help you overcome any obstacle in your way.
I don’t cook and never will. How can I do this program?
That’s never a problem. Our nutrition team can help you shop in such a way that you’ll need few cooking skills. Who knows, if you also check out some of our cooking demonstrations, you may change your mind about cooking.
- My life is so crazy right now. I’m afraid if I get started, something will come up and I’ll have to stop. So shouldn’t I wait until I’m sure nothing will get in the way?
- I work long hours during the week. Can I still be successful in your program?
- I have a crazy work schedule. How can I ever do the program when I never know from week to week when I’ll be working?
- I can never come on Saturdays to exercise because of my kids’ busy sports and activity schedules. Can I still be successful in the program?
- I am expecting to have surgery in eight weeks. Should I wait to start the next program instead of starting now?
- I am taking a two week vacation in the middle of the program. Should I wait and take the next session, instead of starting now?
- I usually attend Wednesday night church functions which would mean I miss lecture. How could I ever enroll in the Wednesday classes?
- I don’t have time to work out, so wouldn’t it be better for me to have gastric bypass surgery, or try weight loss medications?
My life is so crazy right now. I’m afraid if I get started, something will come up and I’ll have to stop. So shouldn’t I wait until I’m sure nothing will get in the way?
No, you should not wait. Reasons not to start will always be there. Get started. If something comes up mid-program, let us know and we’ll work with you. Our goal is for you to succeed and we will do whatever is necessary to help you do that.
I work long hours during the week. Can I still be successful in your program?
Yes! Your work schedule is most likely not different from that of many others. The lectures are offered both morning and evening and the exercise class schedule is full of options for both before and after work. Part of what you will learn in the program is how to make good nutrition and activity a part of your everyday life by planning and prioritizing. The ZG staff will work with you to ensure your success.
Alternatively, you might want to consider the twelve week ZG KEY Sunday Program where we officially meet on Sundays only. This version of the program is designed for people who have especially busy weekday schedules or may travel during the week.
I have a crazy work schedule. How can I ever do the program when I never know from week to week when I’ll be working?
We offer a twelve week ZG KEY Sunday Program that is designed for people who have busy weekday schedules or may travel during the week. This program meets on Sundays and includes lecture, exercise, and access to support services, all in one afternoon.
I can never come on Saturdays to exercise because of my kids’ busy sports and activity schedules. Can I still be successful in the program?
You can certainly be successful. There is always the option to come in on Sunday afternoon, if you are unable to attend a Saturday session.
I am taking a two week vacation in the middle of the program. Should I wait and take the next session, instead of starting now?
We would suggest that you begin the program now. By doing so you will begin to learn about the underlying causes of being overweight and also become comfortable with the exercise routine. You can apply this knowledge while on vacation. When you return, we will help you catch up on the lectures you may have missed and our trainers will get you back on track with the exercise. If you need a couple of extra weeks to regain strength and fitness, we will add that time to your membership, at no extra charge.
I usually attend Wednesday night church functions which would mean I miss lecture. How could I ever enroll in the Wednesday classes?
Lectures are given twice during the day; one in the morning and the other in the evening. Also, videotaped lectures are available on site, if you ever have to miss a lecture.
- I have tried to lose weight many times before and I’m not confident that this time would be any different. Do you think some people are just destined to stay overweight and/or unhealthy?
- I am self-conscious in gyms, especially with all those young, fit people running around. Is your place any different?
- I think my problem is lack of willpower. Do you think I’d do better with a crash course in willpower than with your program?
- I haven’t stepped foot in a gym for over 15 years. I need some extra help. Since it appears ZG uses the supervised group approach, will I get enough individualized assistance?
I have tried to lose weight many times before and I’m not confident that this time would be any different. Do you think some people are just destined to stay overweight and/or unhealthy?
Not at all! Understand that everyone in class with you would have similar questions and concerns. You are not alone. Being part of a class will give you the opportunity to meet many new friends with the same obstacles and goals that you have. It’s a wonderful, instant support group.
I am self-conscious in gyms, especially with all those young, fit people running around. Is your place any different?
We’re told by members that ZG has a very different feeling to it. At ZG you participate with others who have the same goals as you and, just as importantly, the same obstacles to achieving those goals. Also, belonging to ZG is an opportunity to work with highly experienced, professional, dedicated staff.
I think my problem is lack of willpower. Do you think I’d do better with a crash course in willpower than with your program?
The ZG KEY program will help you understand the physiological reasons why you don’t have control of your eating. It is not a matter of willpower. During the course you will have access to the ‘100 ZG KEY’ sessions led by Dr. Zacharias or a member of her team. These are small support groups that review nutrition and fitness concepts and that share success stories. What better way to learn and get support than to share with others who have the same questions and concerns you have.
I haven’t stepped foot in a gym for over 15 years. I need some extra help. Since it appears ZG uses the supervised group approach, will I get enough individualized assistance?
We can give you whatever individualized help you might need, but we also encourage you to take advantage of the supervised class structure. Remember, your individual program was designed based on your pre-program assessment. So, although you are exercising in a class, your prescribed program is unique to you and your abilities.

I have over 200 pounds to lose. How can you help me?
The ZG KEY program will teach you how to make appropriate nutrition and exercise part of your everyday life. It’s about creating a healthy lifestyle and environment for losing weight safely and keeping it off forever.
I have dieted many times in my life. I even lost 100 pounds once but then gained it all back, plus some. Diets just don’t work for me. What would be different if I were to join your program?
This program is not a diet! Most diets tell you what to eat and not eat. We tell you the “why” and then help you put it in the context of your everyday life. Blood sugar swings, along with hormonal and metabolic imbalances, are what’s behind the yo-yo dieting phenomenon. Also, our supervised program of cardiovascular fitness and strength training alters your body composition which increases insulin sensitivity and further promotes weight loss.
I spend most of my time on the road, in hotels and eating out at restaurants. Maybe I’m destined to just keep gaining weight. Can you help someone like me?
Yes, we absolutely can help. Our twelve week Sunday ZG KEY Program was designed for those that travel or who have busy weekday schedules. Check it out on our website under “THE ZG KEY SUNDAY PROGRAM.”
I know I can lose the weight but I’m afraid I’ll just gain it back. How will your program help me maintain after I lose it?
The ZG KEY program will teach you the “why” of nutrition and the safe and appropriate way to exercise. Your brain and body have adapted to an abnormal lifestyle that includes poor nutrition and lack of activity. Your body was not designed for that lifestyle. Our program will help you “reboot,” re-energize and put you on a path to better health. Appropriate nutrition and activity will become the natural part of your life that it was meant to be.
I’m thinking about trying one of those “Lose Weight Quick” programs. How could I do better with ZG than with one of those programs?
ZG KEY is not a sprint. It is a marathon that requires time to learn and practice and to gradually increase your strength and cardiovascular fitness. We give you the tools and knowledge you need to live a long, healthier life.
I only have 20 pounds to lose. Your program’s not for me, is it?
The ZG KEY program is about making you healthier, regardless of how much or how little weight you want to lose. The benefits of understanding and applying optimal nutrition and fitness habits will stay with you for a lifetime.
Wouldn’t it be better for me just to hire a personal trainer and go on a diet?
Diets and the use of personal trainers are very difficult “habits” to maintain. ZG gives you the tools to make sustainable, permanent changes in your life. The program educates you and puts YOU in control.
I looked at your website and it seems complicated to get started. And I already see a doctor. Why do I have to get an assessment?
The purpose of the assessment is to establish your baseline and to create your customized program, taking into consideration your health history, physical limitations, goals, and cardiovascular fitness. This is reviewed by Dr. Zacharias who will meet with you, if necessary, to go over any questions or concerns you may have. We of course would be happy to accommodate your busy schedule when making the assessment appointment.
Can I come in and tour the place first and decide later? Am I going to be pressured to join by salespeople?
Feel free to come in and take a tour, with absolutely no obligation. You can even have the body composition analysis and consultation done for free while you’re here. Our hope is to work with you to make you healthier.
As a physician assistant, I think I’m pretty well versed in nutrition so I’m not sure I need the medical lectures. May I skip those and get a discount?
The lectures are an important piece to the program. With all due respect, you also don’t know what you don’t know. You will be surprised how much you learn about scientifically proven nutrition and exercise principles and how to apply them to your life. In addition to the education factor, you progress through the program with your set group and missing lectures would exclude you from very important group camaraderie and support. That having been said, you could have a “gym only” membership.
I already belong to a gym. Can I skip that part and just attend the medical lectures?
The program not only provides you the opportunity to exercise but our training staff will be sure you are progressing appropriately and safely. Also, the structured classes provide accountability and ensure you get the most out of the program. By joining Phase I, you also have access to support groups, workshops, trainer accountability teams, grocery store tours, and more.
My spouse would like to enroll with me but doesn’t really need the program. Could she/he just attend the lectures and get a discount?
The program includes all the medical education, access to nutritional and training staff and structured, progressive exercise classes. We encourage everyone who participates at ZG to take part in the entire program. This is the best way to make sure you are getting the “whole story” and doing the right thing.
I see your ads everywhere and have read the many member testimonials on your website and in the paper. Are those people real? And if I join would I have to agree to be in an ad? I am very private.
All of those people are absolutely real. Any participation in testimonials, verbal, written or video, is completely voluntary. We respect your desire to remain private…… unless of course you change your mind when you start feeling better!
I see you have a heated, shallow pool at your Northside location. Is the pool a required part of your program? I’m not crazy about pools.
The pool is an added option for the program. It is primarily prescribed for those with significant joint or mobility problems who may have difficulty weight training or using the cardio equipment. After reviewing your health assessment, the exercise science team will lay out the options for your exercise program. The pool can be part of that, if you so desire and it’s appropriate.
